Hummingbirds live in open woodlands, at the edge of forests, meadows, grasslands, parks, gardens and backyards.
Many people think hummingbirds eat only the nectar of flowers. While they can visit over 1,000 different flowers a day in search of nectar, they also eat a variety of insects including ants, mosquitoes, aphids, gnats, midges, caterpillars, flying ants, weevils, small beetles, whiteflies and even insect eggs. Hummingbirds also eat tree sap and will often eat from the holes that Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers have drilled in the trees.

Hummingbirds need a lot of energy because they can beat their wings faster than any other bird. Their wings beat at an astonishing rate of up to 200 beats per second! Hummingbirds have a very fast metabolism and their heart beats at over 1,200 beats per minute.
