The first official “Earth Day” campaign took place in the United States on April 22, 1970 to raise environmental protection awareness and became recognized worldwide in 1990. Today, Earth Day is observed by more than 1 billion people in over 190 countries each year. In the spirit of the day, what better way to celebrate than getting your pets involved in doing some good for the Earth?
Composting is the process of decomposing yard and food waste naturally into organic matter, which can be used as a rich, sustainable fertilizer for gardens and lawns. Pet-safe herbs can be quickly grown on a sunny window sill, and extra herbs can be dried and stored in recycled glass jars as seasoning.

Pet parents understand that sometimes items we expected our pet would like just don’t hit the mark. Rather than let those toys, treats, and supplies sit around the house, check local animal shelters and rescues for their specific donation needs. Most will accept clean and gently used (human) bedding and towels with no holes or stains, unused or gently used grooming supplies, toys, water & food bowls, empty cereal or shoe boxes, and paper bags. Another option is donating or selling to a friend through channels like Facebook Marketplace. This is a great way to do some spring cleaning and give new life to items that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
Plant the seeds, feed the birds, or go outside and appreciate nature with your pet. One small change today can make a world of difference for many tomorrows. Happy Earth Day!
